Soil Preparation
If you are replacing your damaged lawn, there are 2 methods we recommend:
Method #1:
-
Rototill the soil to a depth of 3 to 4 inches, rototilling first one way and then the other.
-
Compact the soil by rolling the area to reveal any highs and lows in the grade.
-
Final grade should be 1 inch below patios, sidewalks, and driveways.
-
If the grade is low, add a good quality, screened topsoil to bring it up to the desired height.
-
Always make sure the soil slopes away from buildings so water will run towards ditches.
-
Rake and level the soil making sure the top 1 to 2 inches are loose – this will allow the new sod to root easily.
Method #2:
-
Use a walk-behind sod cutter to strip the existing lawn.
-
Roll up the old sod and remove it from the site.
-
Rake the compacted soil to a depth of 2 to 3 inches, filling in any depressions as you go.

How to Sod a Lawn?
There are several steps to ensure sod is properly installed onto your lawn. The following points will help ensure a successful installation process:
-
Before placing your sod order, make sure the ground is completely prepped.
-
People who are not used to physical labour should take it slowly and, if required, seek assistance.
-
Locate a straight line, such as a curb or driveway, or stretch a taut string across the sodded area.
-
To make the first row, work along this line.
-
Smooth the area using a rake just before sodding.
-
Arrange in a brickwork pattern.
-
Ensure that all joints between the sods are tightly butted together and do not overlap. On steep slopes, staking is recommended.
-
Cut the sod using a knife to fit non-rectangular edges and small spots.
-
If you are unable to lay your sod right away, we recommend putting it in the shade and breaking the skid down into smaller piles (sod should be installed within 24 hours of delivery).
-
Use a roller to press the roots into the soil in the sodded area.
-
Soak the area in the water right away - wet the sod until the soil beneath it is moist. This should be done regularly for the next two weeks or until the sod has taken root.
-
10 to 14 days following the installation, start mowing. For the first two to three cuts, mow at the maximum setting, then gradually decrease the mower to the desired height over the next three to four cuts.

FAQs
The following are some commonly asked questions about our sod installation in Barrie:
Can I Place Sod on a Slope?
Absolutely. A method that works is starting from the bottom till you reach the top. You can use a sod staple to stake the sod into the ground to keep it from sliding if required.
When Is the Ideal Time to Install Fresh Sod?
You can install new sod anytime during the growing season, as long as the ground isn't frozen. Ideally, spring and autumn are the perfect seasons for installing sod because the cold and occasional rain helps it take root.
Can I Walk on Newly Installed Sod?
Generally, we recommend avoiding foot and pet traffic for at least 3-4 weeks till the sod is fully rooted. A simple way to figure out whether it has rooted or not is to pull a sod piece's end. If there is resistance, it means that it has taken root.
Can I Water the Sod at Night?
Watering grass at night or even in the late evening can promote the growth of diseases and fungi. The ideal time to water sod is the morning and late afternoon.

When Can I Mow the New Sod?
You should only mow the new sod once the new root system has emerged. We recommend waiting until the grass is at least 3 inches tall before you decide to mow it.
